Abstract The Chinese herb scutellaria baicalensis
In 1990, a flavone isolated from the medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi was shown to possess potent antiviral activity against the influenza virus.
Baicalin (BA) is a flavonoid compound purified from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and has been shown to possess potent inhibitory activity against viruses.
Therefore, the antiviral activity of BA might not be restricted to the virus species, making it a potent therapy in treating various influenza viruses. Moreover, BA, purified from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, has been used in treating several diseases and proved to be safe . Thus, development in the study of BA in antiviral activities may constitute a new safe approach to viral prevention and therapy.
I have used Scutellaria baicalensis primarily for allergic colds/hayfever with good results.
I have not tried it for the flu.
Available in Israel as a tincture in herbal pharmacies.
Can cause some sleep, so be careful when using it in the daytime and driving.
