Licorice root has been well known since long traditionally in Germany and in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
It also has been used as a flavouring agent and a cough medicine.
Licorice is nowadays mostly known for the use with gastric ulcer and other gastric conditions in the form of DGL
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is the safest form of licorice because the
compound glycyrrhizin has been removed from it in order to prevent it from raising blood pressuere.
The glycyrrhizin in licorice has a steroid-like effect which the well known possible side effects.
Take DGL licorice tablets before meals[between meals] and chew them,so that they become mixed with saliva for an optimal effect, swallowing capsules will not help here, and I have no idea why Solgar has DGL licorice capsules on the market in Israel [of course you can open the capsules and suck the power, but this gives quite a mess[and black shirts…]

The Chinese seem to add to all their herbal compound formulas -they never use a single herb!- a bit of licorice which is considered to help “opening all the meridians”
So there is definitely a place for the whole herb but this is best done under professional guidance to prevent side effects [licorice can reduce potassium levels in the blood and cause oedema and hypertension[sodium retention] The Dutch are “crazy” about licorice-sweets[called ‘drop’] and have learned their lesson when so many developed extreme hypertension because the overuse of drop [‘theie bamba’]
