Cystic Fibrosis and Dolphins – An Intriguing Observation
While recently reviewing the medical literature on a possible connection between recurrent ileus (intestinal obstruction) and cystic fibrosis (CF)—because a male patient I am currently treating for recurrent ileus has relatives with cystic fibrosis—I came across an old note that I thought might be of interest.
It was prompted by a letter I had received years ago from one of my patients. The original letter was written in Dutch. I translated it into English using Google Translate and then carefully corrected and edited the text.
Whether the reported effect was due to the dolphins’ ultrasonic emissions, the mechanical vibrations transmitted through the water, psychological factors, or something else entirely, I do not know. Nevertheless, I found the observation fascinating enough to preserve.
It also reminded me of the intriguing references to dolphins in the Talmud (see: http://people.ucalgary.ca/~elsegal/Shokel/990826_Dolphin.html).
Cystic Fibrosis and Dolphins
Dear Dr. Yitschak,
I recently read a letter in a Dutch women’s magazine written by the mother of a child with cystic fibrosis (CF).
The family had participated in a program that fulfills the dreams of seriously ill children. The child’s greatest wish was to swim with dolphins. The wish was granted, and they traveled to a dolphinarium in Thailand.
According to the mother, the child spent about an hour swimming, diving, and playing with the dolphins. She was especially struck by the powerful vibrations she felt from the dolphins’ bodies while they swam together.
[7/30/2026 12:15 PM] Allthatcanheal: What happened afterward astonished everyone. The child experienced a remarkable clinical improvement that the treating physicians could not explain. Even more striking, for several months afterward she remained free of the recurrent respiratory infections that had previously been such a constant part of her illness.
Eventually the improvement gradually faded. Encouraged by the previous experience, the mother decided to repeat the experiment on her own initiative. She traveled with her daughter to a dolphinarium in Egypt.
Once again, the same pattern occurred: a significant improvement followed the dolphin encounter.
The mother therefore planned to continue these visits whenever possible.
When I read this, I immediately wondered whether something similar might be available in Israel. If I am not mistaken, there is a dolphin reef in Eilat where such experiences may be possible.
This is, of course, only an anecdotal observation and should not be interpreted as evidence of efficacy. Nevertheless, unusual clinical observations have often served as the starting point for new scientific hypotheses. Given that cystic fibrosis is characterized by abnormally thick mucus secretions, one cannot help wondering whether the acoustic vibrations or ultrasonic signals produced by dolphins might, in some way, transiently influence mucus properties or mucociliary clearance. At present, this remains entirely speculative, but it is certainly an intriguing question worthy of further investigation.
