PURSLANE – Farmers in al-Hasa and Qatif occasionally cultivate this plant and sell it as a vegetable for salads. Dioscorides says purslane can be used to combat fevers. Avicenna recommended drinking purslane juice and sour grape juice diluted with water to remedy extreme thirst while travelling. Arabic names: BARBIR(al-Hasa, Qatif), BAQL (Saudi Arabia), BAQLA HAMQA’ (antiquity).
