Though there are standard pharmacological treatments available for PTSD, their side effects limits their usage. Cardamomum is known as an anxiolytic agent in traditional medicine. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the effect of cardamomum extract on anxiety-like behavior in a rat model of PTSD.Methods: Adult male wistar rats were used for the current study. Methanolic extract of cardamomum was prepared in different dosages (200, 400 and 800 mg/kg). Rats underwent single prolonged stress (SPS) or sham and received either saline or different dosages of cardamomum extract immediately after stress sessions. Open field test and elevated plus maze were used to evaluate locomotion and anxiety-like behavior in the animals. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Cardamom extract (400 mg/kg) administered immediately after stress increased locomotion and decreased anxiety-like behavior in the animals of SPS group. Conclusion: Cardamomum extract administered immediately after stress might help to prevent the formation of anxiety-like behavior in the animals. Further studies are suggested to clarify the exact mechanism involved. Keywords: PTSD; Cardamomum; Anxiety-like behavior; Rat
