Strawberries ‘dangerous’ for children: ‘I myself eat a maximum of one such container a week’ NEWS Strawberries from the supermarket should bear a warning that they are unsuitable for children and pregnant women, says the Pesticide Action Network Netherlands.

‘The pesticides found on strawberries are known to have harmful effects. Some are carcinogenic, others endocrine disruptors, others probably are, and others are toxic to the liver,’ says Jacob de Boer, professor of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology at VU University Amsterdam, after reviewing the research. ‘Growers adhere to the standards: they use as much of each pesticide as is just allowed. The problem is that they are allowed to use different pesticides. As a result, the strawberries can contain different pesticides with a comparable effect.’
