A man who had a finger amputated and preserved in a jar in the heated basement of his mother’s house had no pain for several years. He then went back to the doctor who had performed the amputation, complaining of a feeling of extreme cold in the area of the missing finger. Following the doctor’s advice to check on the condition of the preserved finger, the man learned that the basement where the jar was stored had become very cold due to an undetected broken window. After the finger was taken out of the cold, the pain left.[Larry Dossey]
