Rav Arush stresses that recalling God’s loving kindness[chesed] is a positive Tora commandment……..possibly one that is not always in the foreground of our mind, but therefore not the less so.
With all the learning and tzidkut in the time of King Hezekiya, when Sancherib’s army was miraculously defeated [185000 officers and all the other soldiers] as it seems there was no jubilant song after the victory and this may have withheld tthe Meshiach.
To show our daily gratitude our sages require us to recite daily in our prayer Psalm 114, which recalls God’s chesed.
Psalms Chapter 124
לוּלֵי יְהוָה, שֶׁהָיָה לָנוּ– יֹאמַר-נָא, יִשְׂרָאֵל. 1 A Song of Ascents; of David. {N}
‘If it had not been the LORD who was for us’, let Israel now say;
2 ‘If it had not been the LORD who was for us, when men rose up against us,
ג אֲזַי, חַיִּים בְּלָעוּנוּ– בַּחֲרוֹת אַפָּם בָּנוּ. 3 Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;
ד אֲזַי, הַמַּיִם שְׁטָפוּנוּ– נַחְלָה, עָבַר עַל-נַפְשֵׁנוּ. 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul;
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.’
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
הַפַּח נִשְׁבָּר, וַאֲנַחְנוּ נִמְלָטְנוּ. 7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers; {N}
the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
ח עֶזְרֵנוּ, בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה– עֹשֵׂה, שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. {P}
