“future”[ in 250 million years], predictions?
Would geologist Hannah Davies take himself seriously??
| Hello Nature readers, Today we find out what Earth’s continents will look like in 250 million years, hear that millions of people live on land contaminated by mining and explore the legacy of Dolly, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. |
| If humans are still around in 250 million years, they might have found ways to adapt to living on an Earth that resembles Arrakis, a desert planet in the 1965 science-fiction novel Dune. (Alex Farnsworth and Chirs Scotese) |
| Earth, 250 million years in the futureUp to 92% of Earth could be uninhabitable to mammals in 250 million years. As the planet’s landmasses drift, a merged Afro-Eurasian continent will eventually crash into the Americas to form a new supercontinent: Pangaea Ultima. The supercontinent’s creation will drive volcanism, which will increase carbon dioxide levels and turn most of the land into a barren, hot desert. In a worst-case scenario, just 8% of the planet’s surface would be habitable to most mammalian life, which would lead to a mass extinction. “I think life will make it through this one,” says geologist Hannah Davies. “It’s just kind of a grim period.”Nature | 5 min read Reference: Nature Geoscience paper |
