A full life means doing many things that the environment considers fun. But it’s not so. The word “entertainment” has no equal in lashon kodesh. The newspapers in Eretz Yisrael invented a word, “bidur,” for entertainment, but that’s not lashon kodesh. We have words for happiness — several of them, in fact — because happiness comes in many forms. If you’re well, it’s a happiness. If you have children, it’s a happiness. If you have plenty to eat, it’s a happiness. If you have shalom, it’s happiness. But entertainment is not a Torah word. The Jewish nation didn’t live for entertainment. Entertainment is a gentile idea. As Jews living in gentile countries, we are prone to thinking gentile thoughts. Enjoy life. Be happy. But don’t go running after entertainment. There’s plenty to be happy about without it. Chasing more and more exciting forms of entertainment entertainment only leaves you with an empty feeling, and you end up more and more unhappy. Live a purposeful life, pursuing the substance of accomplishment. That is the only way to be happy in this world and the next.
