I am trying to send the following scheme every year forthose of you who may have to drink or/and eaton yom kippur or suddenly need to do so.ALSO some tips for those who are fasting, in case theyneed the tipsAnyone really very familiar with halacha will not need thiswriting. If you are not familiar with what is written below , thenplease print this out BEFORE Yom-Kippur or write the mainpoints down on a piece of paper in case this is suddenlyrelevant.Drink and eat frequently the day before yom ha-kipppurim. This is considered a Mitzvah in itself!Even better, start the day before erev yom Kippur. This Y.K starts on Sunday evening/afternoon so tryto drink very frequently this Shabbat and eat morethan regular! On Sunday eat and drink plenty but don’t overeatAs fluid organic grape juice [or grapes] during theday may help a lot. Also drink often water and with a bit of lemon juice[rinse your mouth after drinking lemon in order notto harm your teeth]In all cases where one thinks that one can’t or should not fast on yom ha-kippurim, it is importantto discuss this with your Rabbi who may help you todecide or may also ask the opinion of your doctor. In case one is not allowed /or not advisedmedically to fast fully one should try to eat / drinkaccording to shiurim [ this means certainmeasured amounts of food or drink ] and by doing soone avoids bringing himself in danger.Serious ill patients -where any fasting may cause[even a doubtful] danger to his life, will be advisedand commanded to eat normally and drink normally. In the case of shiurim [as said before, this meansspecial amounts to eat and drink, if needed] yourrabbi will tell you how much you can eat and drinkand how often. For those of you who were told to eat anddrink shiurim andfor some reason had no chanceto ask a rabbi what to do , the following e-mail iswritten but it does not come to replace by anymeans the obligation to try and ask a rabbi.[ printthis out BEFORE Yom-Kippur or write the mainpoints down on a piece of paper in case this issuddenly relevant].According to Sefaradim:[from the book Gateway to Halacha by Rabbi Eliezer Toledano/ rabbi Shmuel Choueka]Eating: a piece of bread [or other food] slightly less then one ounce [one ounce = 28.3 gram].One should wait 9 minutes before eating the nextpiece if necessary. The book states: “If these amounts of food orintervals of time between eating prevent the personfrom being calmed, he should eat in his regularmanner”.Drinking: Slightly less than one and a half ounce[=42 gram] which may be repeatedevery 9minutes and if not possible, every 7 or 5 or even 21/2 minutes and continue for as long as necessary. If he can’t wait, then pause at least for a momentbetween each mouthful. If this is also not possible then drink regularly.Simply: [some sources give a bit easier scheme toremembereating 30 grams , drinking 40 grams [a spoon ofwater is 15 gram][14.7 gram]The amount of eating and drinking are notcounted together!![lo mitztarfim!] So the allowed piece of food can be combined withthe allowed amount of fluid [for example a bit lessthan 28 gram food and a bit less than 42 gram drinkcan be taken at the same “time”.Weigh some bread/food before yom kippur to getan idea.
[The Ashkenazim have a bit simpler method ,I wouldthink………]Ashkenazim:[From the book of Rabbi Elozar Barclay/Rabbi Yitzchok Jaeger][Guidelines]Eating: maximum at one session: 30 cc [this is avolume and not aweight].The book mentions that the external volume of a standard Israelismall matchbox is 30cc.[nice idea in mine opinion]Drinking : a cheek-full [as much fluid as one can hold in one cheek].This can vary from 40 cc to 30cc for an average or smaller personaccording to the book. One may measure a cheek full for himself by keeping an amount offluid in on cheek and then measure this in a glass and mark this.[This I heard and is not brought as such in the book]The waiting time between portions should be 9 minutes or less ifimpossible.[see for these times probably the sephardim opinionabove]If one can limit himself only to eating or only to drinking then thatshould be done.If one has to drink then organic grapefruit juice [if allowed ] isprobably the best -mixed with water-as it also “nutritious” andmay prevent unnecessary eatingMedicines which are tasteless or bitter can be taken as such, without fluid. If one can’t swallow the medicine without fluid [and one does notdrink] then he may try to swallow it with some bitter tasting liquid. This is in short a trial to help you if you need it, it comes from thesources as described above. If possible I will send some more tips.As the last meal, eating plenty of carbohydrates pasta/macaroni /bread can be very helpful , maybe with some lentils or afuna. Some cucumbers during the day will supply quite a bit offluid.Try to avoid to eat a salad as the last meal, it will fill you up butnot give enough satisfying feeling [satiation] and may cause gas andalso it does not help to “hold fluids in”A nice video fromAish:https://www.aish.com/h/hh/video/Easy-Fast-in-Seven-Steps.html?s=mm1 of 5
